How to Build a Streetwear Fit Around a Graphic Tee

A graphic tee is the easiest way to make a statement — and the easiest way to look like you tried too hard. The difference is in how you build the fit around it.

Here’s the RTLA approach.

Choose a Tee Worth Building Around

Not all graphic tees are created equal. A 260GSM heavyweight tee holds its shape, sits properly on the body, and the print doesn’t crack after three washes. That’s the baseline. If the tee is thin and the graphic is already peeling, no fit is going to save it.

Our artist collab tees — GRIMM, TAIPAN, LUCID, APEX — are built to be the centrepiece. Real art. Real weight. Real construction.

Keep the Bottoms Clean

When the tee is doing the work, the bottoms should stay out of the way. Black jeans, cargo pants, or structured shorts in a neutral tone. Avoid competing patterns or loud colours. The graphic is the focal point — everything below the waist is the foundation.

Footwear: Match the Energy

Dark, bold graphic? Go with a chunky sole or a classic black sneaker. Psychedelic or colourful art (like our LUCID or BUBBLES tees)? You can afford to bring in a more expressive shoe — a colourful New Balance or a retro runner. The shoe should echo the energy of the graphic, not fight it.

Layering a Graphic Tee

Open button-up shirt over the tee — left unbuttoned, slightly oversized. This frames the graphic without hiding it. Alternatively, a coach jacket worn open works the same way. The key is keeping the layer open so the art stays visible.

Accessories

Keep it minimal. A chain, a cap, or a single ring. The graphic tee is already making a statement — you don’t need to stack accessories on top of it. Less is more when the tee is doing the heavy lifting.

The RTLA Rule

Buy less. Wear better. One quality graphic tee worn right beats five cheap ones worn wrong every time.
